Well we officially had our first
houseguests…are we married or what J?
Jennifer’s parents visited us in our temporary apartment on the base in Ventura
and we had a wonderful time spending the weekend together. Fortunately, Dad was
able to put some diplomatic pressure on the Orange County recorder, get our
marriage license and hand-deliver it on the Friday morning of their visit. We
are so grateful! As you can imagine, the path to getting Jennifer into the
military system is clogged with red tape and NOTHING can be done without the
state marriage license (which is evidently way different from a marriage
certificate from the church, which means nothing to “them”). Anyway, after a
Friday of running around dealing with military ID’s, medical records, legal
name changes, etc. we were free to explore Ojai the following day.
Ojai is a charming small town
slightly inland from Ventura that has a very “Laguna Beach vibe”. For those of
you who are unfamiliar with the beaches of Southern California, it can best be
described as artsy, natural and anti-chain store. We enjoyed walking around, seasonal cups of
coffee, lunch and of course the town’s famous open-air bookstore. Books have
such character, especially the used books of these shelves. In a world of
ever-popular e-readers, it’s a special experience to browse the stacks of books
that are tangible and can sweep you away to explore any topic imaginable, and
at the same time unite you to all of those who read it before you.
Sunday was the realization of a
long-time plan to visit the Reagan Library as an Easter gift from Jennifer’s
parents. Family bonding AND educational! The vista from the library of Simi
Valley is beautiful and the museum is packed with information about the
president and political events of the 1980’s. We both feel much more educated
about our birth decade now J. Sierra had the sniffles and cuddled up with
John, holding is finger, for several hours…awwww. Air Force One is also at the
museum and offers excellent insight into the President’s business and leisure
in the skies.
After an amazing weekend we said
farewell and both headed back to work on Monday, with excited anticipation of
Thanksgiving Day off J.
