Bullet Train to Kyoto

John's parents' visit continued with a sightseeing twist when we headed to Kyoto. Although John and Jennifer had visited Kyoto previously on an MWR tour, our journey included firsts for everyone, the most significant of which was choosing the bullet train as our mode of long distance transportation. Known as the Shinkansen in Japan, the bullet train reaches speeds of 177 miles per hour and provides comfortable and efficient travel between some of Japan's most popular destinations, primarily connecting the Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka metropolitan areas.

Upon arrival, we immediately headed out to begin exploring Kyoto, imperial Japan's former capital and cultural center. First we visited Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its impressive tunnels formed by thousands of red torii gates. Next we ventured into the geisha quarter of Gion, where we enjoyed a traditional Japanese meal and discovered that the modern night life offerings might make more traditional geisha blush.

The next day we returned to the Philosopher's Walk and stunning gardens of the Ginkaku-ji Silver Pavilion, and for the first time visited Kinkaku-ji. Laying eyes on the famous Golden Pavilion was nothing short of breathtaking! Originally the retirement villa of a shogun and destroyed in 1950 by arson, this reconstruction is covered in gold leaf, dazzling what seemed like a crowd of travelers from all over the world.

Alas, our Kyoto getaway came to a close as we boarded the Shinkansen to return home, well-stocked with memories and a greater appreciation for classic Japan.
